Is Watermelon Juice Too Sweet? Make It With a Slow Juicer in Malaysia

On 25 August 2026, MetMalaysia put 17 areas across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak under a Level 1 hot weather status, Bernama reported (published August 2026). Level 1 means the top temperature reaches 35 to 37°C for at least three days in a row.

On days like that, a cold glass of watermelon juice is hard to beat. But it tastes so sweet that many people wonder: is watermelon juice too sweet to drink often? The numbers say it is lighter than it tastes. Here is what is in it, and how to make it with a slow juicer in Malaysia.

How sweet is watermelon, really?

According to USDA FoodData Central (published April 2019), 100 g of raw watermelon has:

  • about 91 g of water
  • 6.2 g of sugars
  • 8.1 mg of vitamin C
  • 30 calories

For comparison, the same database lists 10.4 g of sugars in 100 g of raw apple. So watermelon carries roughly 40% less sugar than apple, weight for weight.

So is watermelon juice too sweet?

It has less sugar than apple, but it still has natural sugar, and juice sugar counts toward the daily free sugars limit set by the World Health Organization (published March 2015). Keep the glass small and have it with a meal.

If you have diabetes or have been told to watch your blood sugar, ask your doctor how fruit juice fits your plan.

Why a slow juicer suits watermelon

Watermelon is soft and full of water. That makes it easy to juice, but the type of machine changes the drink.

  • A blender keeps the flesh, so you get a thick drink with bits in it. Many people sieve it afterwards.
  • A slow juicer presses the flesh against a fine screen. The juice runs out smooth and clear, and the pulp (the dry fibre left after juicing) goes to a separate cup.

A slow juicer also runs at a low speed, so the juice has less foam. It is quiet, too, which helps in a flat or condo. Our page on juicer noise in condo living explains why.

How to make watermelon juice with a slow juicer

  1. Chill the watermelon in the fridge first. Cold fruit makes cold juice, so you need less ice.
  2. Cut off the green rind. Leave a thin layer of white if you like a fresher taste.
  3. Cut the red flesh into pieces that fit the chute. The small black seeds can go in, and the slow juicer pushes them out with the pulp.
  4. Feed the pieces in slowly. Watermelon gives a lot of juice quickly, so keep the cup under the spout.
  5. Drink it soon after you make it.

One medium slice usually fills a glass. You do not need to add sugar or syrup.

Ways to make it even lighter

Watermelon mixes well with low-sugar ingredients that are easy to find in Malaysia:

  • Cucumber. Adds volume and a cool, green taste.
  • Lime. A squeeze brightens the flavour.
  • Mint. A few leaves go in with the flesh.

You can also top the glass up with cold water or ice. The drink stays refreshing, and each glass carries less sugar.

Picking and storing watermelon

A good watermelon feels heavy for its size. Look for a creamy yellow patch on one side, where it rested on the ground as it ripened. Many sellers in Malaysian markets will cut a small piece for you to taste, so ask.

A whole watermelon keeps for several days in a cool spot. Once cut, cover the flesh and keep it in the fridge, and use it within a few days.

If you have more than you can drink, cut the red flesh into cubes and freeze them. Thaw them before juicing, because frozen fruit gives little juice. Frozen cubes do work in a blender with a little lime for a cold slush. Watermelon juice tastes best fresh, so make only what you will drink that day.

Cleaning up after watermelon

Watermelon leaves a sticky film when it dries. Rinse the screen and the juice cup under the tap straight after you finish. If the holes in the screen start to clog over time, our guide on how to deep clean a slow juicer screen shows how to clear them.

Choosing a slow juicer in Malaysia for hot days

If you plan to make watermelon juice through the hot months, look for a wide chute, so you cut less, and parts that are quick to rinse. A machine that is easy to clean is one you will keep using.

When you are ready, you can compare slow juicers in Malaysia and pick one that fits your kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

Is watermelon juice high in sugar?

Less than many fruits. USDA data lists 6.2 g of sugars in 100 g of raw watermelon, against 10.4 g in raw apple.

Can I drink watermelon juice every day?

Keep it to a small glass with a meal. Its sugar still counts toward your daily free sugars.

Do I need to remove watermelon seeds before juicing?

Not in a slow juicer. The small seeds leave with the pulp. In a blender, they get broken up, so many people remove them.

Should I juice the watermelon rind?

Cut off the hard green skin. A thin layer of white can stay if you like the taste.

How do I make watermelon juice less sweet?

Juice it with cucumber, add a squeeze of lime, or top the glass up with cold water and ice.

Is a slow juicer or a blender better for watermelon?

A slow juicer gives smooth, clear juice. A blender gives a thicker drink with bits of flesh.
