Is Homemade Apple Juice Healthier Than Store-Bought? Which Juicer in Malaysia Is Best?
Apples are easy to buy in Malaysia. When the sales tax was widened on 1 July 2025, imported apples, oranges and dates were left out of the new tax on imported fruit, as RinggitPlus reported (published July 2025).
So apples are a fair choice for juice at home. But is homemade apple juice healthier than the carton on the supermarket shelf? And which juicer in Malaysia is best for apples? Homemade juice has nothing added, and plain bottled juice keeps little of the apple's vitamin C: 0.9 mg per 100 g against 4.6 mg in the raw fruit. This guide compares the two drinks using official nutrient data, then looks at the machines.
Homemade apple juice vs store-bought: the numbers
The US Department of Agriculture keeps a public food database, FoodData Central. Its figures (published April 2019) for raw apples, bottled apple juice and bottled apple juice with added vitamin C let you compare them per 100 g.
| Per 100 g | Raw apple with skin | Bottled apple juice, no added vitamin C | Bottled apple juice, vitamin C added |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sugars | 10.4 g | 9.6 g | 9.6 g |
| Vitamin C | 4.6 mg | 0.9 mg | 38.5 mg |
| Fibre | 2.4 g | 0.2 g | 0.2 g |
First, the sugar is close. Bottled juice and the whole fruit carry a similar amount of natural sugar per 100 g, so a glass of either is worth counting.
Second, plain bottled juice has very little vitamin C. The fruit has about five times more. Many brands add vitamin C back, and the label will say so. The third column shows how big that added amount can be.
Third, almost all the fibre is gone in bottled juice.
Why fresh juice keeps more
Fresh juice has not been heated to make it last on a shelf, and it has not sat in a warehouse for weeks. You press it and drink it, and you know nothing has been added.
You also decide what goes in. You can juice one apple with cucumber and celery, so the glass carries less fruit sugar. You can keep the skin on, which saves peeling time. And you know there is nothing added.
One thing does not change: juice loses most of its fibre to the pulp (the dry fibre left after juicing), at home or in a factory. Our guide on where the fibre goes in a slow juicer shows simple ways to use it.
Which juicer in Malaysia is best for apples?
Apples are hard and juicy, so most machines can handle them. The difference is in how much juice you get and how it tastes.
A slow juicer
A slow juicer presses the apple with a turning screw. It runs at a low speed, so the juice is smooth and has less foam. It is also quiet, which helps if you juice early in the morning. Many slow juicers now have a wide chute, so you can drop in a whole small apple or large pieces with little cutting.
A fast spinning juicer
A fast juicer uses a spinning disc to shred the apple. It is quick, but the juice is often foamy and can separate soon after you pour it. Our article on why juice separates in 5 minutes explains what is happening in the glass.
A blender
A blender keeps the whole apple, skin and flesh, so you get a thick drink with all the fibre. It is not juice. If you want something you can sip like a carton drink, you would need to strain it.
For clear, smooth apple juice that you drink straight away, a slow juicer is the best fit for most homes.
What makes the best juicer in Malaysia for daily apple juice
If apple juice will be a daily habit, look at these points before you buy:
- Chute size. A wide chute saves cutting time every morning.
- Easy cleaning. Fewer parts and a screen that rinses quickly make daily use realistic. See how to deep clean a slow juicer screen.
- Warranty and spare parts in Malaysia. A long motor warranty is useful only if repairs and parts are available locally.
- Running cost. Our breakdown of what the best juicer in Malaysia costs covers parts and upkeep, not just the price tag.
How to make apple juice at home
- Wash the apples well. Keep the skin on.
- Cut out the core if your chute is narrow. The small seeds can go through a slow juicer, but many people remove the core for taste.
- Feed the pieces in slowly.
- Add half a cucumber or a stick of celery if you want a lighter glass.
- Drink it soon after you make it, while it tastes freshest.
Green apples give a sharper, less sweet juice. Red apples give a sweeter one. A squeeze of lime stops the colour turning brown so quickly.
Fitting apple juice into a balanced day
Apple juice carries natural sugar, the same as the fruit. The World Health Organization (published March 2015) counts the sugar in fruit juice as free sugar, which it asks people to keep low.
A few habits keep a daily glass in balance:
- Pour a small glass.
- Drink it with breakfast instead of as a snack on its own.
- Mix in vegetables such as cucumber, celery or spinach.
- Eat a whole apple on other days, so you still get the fibre.
If you have diabetes, ask your doctor how juice fits your plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is homemade apple juice healthier than store-bought?
Homemade juice has nothing added and is not heat-treated for shelf life. USDA data shows a whole apple has about five times the vitamin C of plain bottled juice, so eat the fruit on some days too. Both carry a similar amount of natural sugar per 100 g.
Does store-bought apple juice have added vitamin C?
Some brands add it, and the label will list it as vitamin C or ascorbic acid. USDA data shows a large gap between bottled apple juice with and without it.
Should I peel apples before juicing?
No. The skin is thin and juices well, so you can save the peeling time. Just wash the apples well first.
Can I put apple seeds in a slow juicer?
A slow juicer can push small seeds out with the pulp. Many people cut out the core anyway because it adds little juice.
Which juicer is best for apple juice in Malaysia?
For smooth juice with little foam, a slow juicer suits most homes. A blender makes a thick apple drink with all the fibre instead.
How long does fresh apple juice last?
It tastes best right after you make it. If you keep it, store it in a sealed bottle in the fridge and drink it the same day.
